Hi!  My name is Karen and this website is an extension of my Instagram account @kyl.scrapbook where I have been sharing snippets of our family’s bilingual journey since 2020.

I was born in Hong Kong and moved to New Zealand at the age of nine.  While studying architecture, I met my husband, who is also from Hong Kong, and moved to New Zealand in his early childhood.  We both speak fluent English and Cantonese, and I can read and write Chinese, although neither of us have lived in Chinese-speaking countries since our move.

I began teaching my pre-school aged daughter Chinese characters with creative methods during the COVID lockdowns.  This has become a passion of mine but it is not all smooth sail.  I value the exchange of inspiration between like-minded parents through online communities.

This website is a work in progress -  multilingual households or those living outside Chinese speaking countries wanting more Chinese exposure at home, will be able to find more on our experience and approaches to date, my bilingualism learnings and resources which I have created.   Happy browsing!
